A massive scandal was taking place in the NFL from the 2009 to 2011 seasons. This was a rolling policy instituted by Saints Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams. It was used purely to drive up morale and non-contract cash incentives for injuring opposing teams players. Its alleged that Williams had used some variation of a bounty system in most teams he worked for before this was brought to the league
and public.
The NFL started its investigation in 2010 and slowly learned that a sizable chunk of the Saints organization was deeply involved. This included a bunch of notable players like linebacker Jonathan Vilma or even other staffing such as the teams actual Head Coach Sean Payton. Williams, Payton, and Vilma were ultimately a few of many the league would suspend. Injuries caused by Saints players from this scandal likely contributed to somewhat shortened careers for Vikings and Cardinals Quarterbacks Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers.
